But 16,000 layoffs will also cost around $500 million and facilities closings and other would increase this loss.

Sun had to pay $500kk to get rid of 5000 people, so I'd say Intel is likely looking at close to $1.5 billion if they sack all 16,000.

Just a comment that if Intel got rid of cell phone & XScale CPUs and tried to keep flash, the flash division would be less competitive than it is already, because Intel was in the habit of giving big discounts on chipsets and cell processors to get design wins for phones. No can do if you don't own them anymore.
