People can do some pretty extreme things when they are afraid, and extremism is almost always a result of fear. The current climate of legislating social relations and affiliations is threatening to a lot of people. Personally, I suspect Kenneth is right. It was a baited trap set by the left and the conservative right wing is falling for it. The right wingers have the game fixed, so they can't wait to score big on this one. I don't see any good coming out of it for either side; unless or until our government gets out of the business of legislating adult affiliation we will just continue beating each other up over this. So, I am starting a reasoned discussion to explore the possibility of taking this role from the courts, altogether. I doubt that it will go anywhere because the lefties and righties are looking at the prize (bait) and are already in a frenzy over it. I have no way of knowing if reason could prevail on this or even if we could come to a rational conclusion, but it seems worth considering.
