Iran is playing 19th century power politics with us and to date this admin is using wilsonian/neocon alternative. Hopefully this is in the process of changing. Unlike what we thought awhile back C2, democracy is not coming to a local theater in that neighborhood (iraq). AT worst a deal with iran will be like like a deal with USSR against Hitler and our opening to Mao during the Cold war. I think the latter is whats happeneing now because both sides realize that the real threat is al quaeda and its world wide reach(ontario). Iran knows that the sunni terrorists will be coming for the shiaa and iran at some point so any further embarrassment or weakening of resolve of the US is really counterproductive for them. Grand deal on nukes, mideast peace, and iraq needed at this time. Look for iraqi split up within a year with shiaa protectorate for iran.
