I had pm'd this to Sun but i suspect he will be too busy to get back to me so i will throw it out there.

"I find myself making your case on iran more and more. I am back to the days of my youth when israel, turkey and iran were bedrock counterweights to soviets and arabs.
Of course its all different now but i continue to believe that iran and US have common interests vis a vis arab states and arab wahabi movement.
I also imagine that iran must be very uneasy with whats going on in afganistan and pakistan as well. If that gets more destabilized that would be a threat to india, iran, russia, china as well as the US. World has taken on the look of late 19th century/early 20th century. That world ended tragically in WW1 but that is not inevitable and in any case many years of stability could occur before a major blowup if any.
Given the reality of the situation, it continues to puzzle me why the iranians take such an extreme rejectionist stance on israel. Being for 67 borders is one thing--being for annihilaiton is quite another, not to mention holocaust denial rhetoric along with elders of zion bull shit. Maybe its just a bargaining ploy for a grand reconciliation between islam and the west. Bin Laden will be after them one day anyway. Its in their interest to position with russia, china, india but if an opening occurs for reconciliation with the US, iran should take it. And visa versa. "
