Wasn't there a domino that was going to topple over and crush a lot of people if Vietnam were allowed to exist?

More importantly, why do we go around in circles? Maybe Elroy can explain it to us.

I think the theory was that the people of Vietnam would be better off as a democratic nation allied with the US than as a communist nation allied with large communist countries. Comparing the numbers with neighboring Thailand seem to agree with the theory.

Thailand (democratic, allied with the US) average annual income per person = $2,000

Vietnam (communist, not allied with the US) average annual income = $600

Any other questions, student boy?

Yeah the political theory at the time was that if Vietnam fell to communism, then their neighbors would fall to communism, and eventually most of the world would fall to communism (sort of like a virus spreading). Of course as things got worse and we knew we couldn't win, then the rational became "there will be a bloodbath if we leave". So we stayed the course for years and years, as more kids got killed.

Of course, there was no domino effect, and there wasn't a bloodbath when we left.

Fast forward... and you have the Bush reverse domino theory. One democracy in the ME and they all will fall to democracy. And now we're transitioning to the rational why we can't leave Iraq because there will be a civil war and it will become a haven for terrorists.

re: Maybe Elroy can explain it to us.

I'm sure he can. Won't make sense but that won't stop him.

58K+ soldiers dead...thousands of lives shattered so much so that the effects linger today. The way of war and unfortunately the way of America today once more.
