Sun thinks the ayotollahs are not the revolutionaries they once were. He also sees a commonality of geopolitical interests between US and IRAN. All the oil is in shiaa areas even in Saudi which is a sunni country.
Sun also feels that despite the new prez rhetoric which is largely for arab consumption, iran would be willing to strike a deal with israel as well.
But even if he is wrong, i go back to my comments on allying with stalin against hitler for example to defeat the nazis. And for the iranians even if they are still firebrands they too might want to offset the increasing influence that russia and china have on them being on their borders. Also they dont want spillage from afganistan if the US were to have setback there.
Its all interesting stuff and i suggest you take a fresh look at this as i have. Getting al quaeda and bin laden are job #1. No doubt iran has been a terror state but Libya just changed sides and khaddafi is still nuts and still in power.

Zarqawis death shouldnt be minimized. He had direct control over the sunni terrorists in iraq, jordan and elsewhere. He wont be easily replaced. I think everyone on this thread will shed no tears for him.
I would direct you and the thread to David Brooks today, op ed NYTimes. He wrote this op ed prior to zarqawis death. It is a scary read because it will ring true for both pro war and anti war folks.
Also the govt is now complete in iraq. Biden says they have three or four months to make the necessary changes in the constitution by majority rule (i believe) before that document is frozen for the most part.
Hawk, you more than anyone else has to admit now that this summer is the last chance for iraq to stay in one piece. We may not state timetables but i think this is the bush position.
