I was in the USMC. Regarding troop levels, my understanding is Bush has ALWAYS left that up to the COMMANDERS ON THE GROUND. They claim they are keeping the troop level at minimums:
1. To keep the Coalition footprint as small as possible, so as to least antagonize the populance with foreigners.
2. Having less troops means less supplying and as we all know the vast majority of our casualties come for IED's often against people and equipment SUPPLYING our front line troops. Today, very few of our casualties come from direct firefights cause every time there is one the terrorists LOSE.
3. Finally, there is a cost involved, people scream now about what this war costs, imagin what it would be if we had %500k troops there (my personal estimate of what it would take to SMOTHER the terrorists). jdn
