I was only a C student in grade school, but improved greatly in high school, where I routinely pulled down D's, one whole higher grade. (It works the same in eggs) By the time I hit university I was already in the E's and finally my grades were so high they had run out of letters! They simply had no more for me to learn. My answers were "unique" as they put it, so they extended me an invitation for early graduation. I was able to finish University in only 2 years with an F- or a GP 1.1, which as far as I know is the highest grade they could award without actually changing the system completely. I would have spent another year in school, but my paw was in the next grade and I couldn't pass him.

Another interesting and related case study that yields much insight into the multi-faceted nature of intelligence is that of prodigies.

The research I have looked at indicated that the main factor that creates a child prodigy is single-minded focus. It seems almost anyone can become a child prodigy, albeit of a level concomitant to their own unique genetic and environmental cirdumstances, as long as they get obsessed with particular areas of knowledge as a kid.

Autistics and idiot savants fit into this schema. Their own personality and brain structure does not keep them from being able to achieve this single-minded type of obsession; a very good argument can be made that in many case it fosters it.

Another interesting aspect of prodigies is that they can be found almost exclusively in four fields -- music, mathematics, chess, and languages. To me, each of these is a set of methods for abstracting patterns from nature, and each draws on a closely-related sets of skills and attributes.

A related field of endeavour is abstracting patterns from the stock market. But, prodigy or not, you can abstract all the patterns you want and it won't do your PF any good unless you can make good decisions on the basis of this data. This moves stock trading beyond the range of the prodigy.

< science is uncovering, at last, how the mind really works.>

I think they're "starting" to catch up with folks who have known all along:

amazon.com

But the key word there is "starting"... what you can learn from Krishnamurti would dwarf textbook on how the mind works... if there are any.
