My history of that account was from what I heard on the radio that day. Can you say the same?

LOL, excellent point. And no sir, I cannot..I was not even a twinkle in my daddy's eye on that fateful day.

I think that getting history "right" as much as possible is important. I did a paper long long ago in college on the diplomatic events of December 7-14, 1941. I remember some of the timing of events, which looking back were oh, so crucial.

Actually, under the tripartite treaty between Italy, Germany and Japan Hitler was not technically required to declare war on the US when we declared war on Japan. However, he did so (much to Churchill's relief) as it then eliminated the issue of whether the US would fight in the Pacific but not in the Atlantic. This set the stage for the momentous decision to place Europe ahead of Asia as primary battlefront...

Historians still wonder if Hitler had waited a while...would the US have declared war on Germany without Germany going first (as they did), or would our isolationist wing have demanded that Britain wait while we take on Japan first....

Interesting to suppose what might have happened if this occured.
