But don't you think since they had him in their sights that US military units in the area could have captured him and documentation instead of killing him?

There's something else curious about this. Remember in the pre-war runup how Bush-Cheney, et. al., made a big deal out of al-Zarqawi being in Baghdad to have his leg amputated from an Afghanstan war injury, and that this was supposedly part of the Saddam-Al Qaeda connection? Afterwards he retreated to the Kurdish controlled northeastern portion of Iraq, deep within the US-imposed No-Fly Zone and near Iran. Bush could have killed him then, and didn't.

Eventually, US intelligence analysts, around 2004, gave Zarqawi his leg back and I guess this is why there was no mention of his leg injury when they found him at the bomb site.

Botton line is that Bush wants a 'bogyman' and he still has OBL. And another bottom line is that the little girl that was killed in that airstrike doesn't seem to matter to Americans.
