This article concerns the loss of a judicial seat by a
very well respected jurist--Dzintra Janavs.

I've appeared before Judge Janavs and fully agree with the positive statements about her set forth in the article.

Her opponent was not even a practicing lawyer. She and her husband, who is a local councilman, own some bakery/bagel shops.

While Judge Janavs was rated "exceptionally well qualified", her opponent was rated "not qualified", which itself is quite a contrast.

There was some speculation that Judge Janavs lost because of her foreign sounding name. Others muse that she was simply outspent.

To me, this outcome illustrates how the public can be played. It happens with polls, which are often designed to yield a desired outcome. It happens with daily talking points and repeated sound bites aimed at instilling certain beliefs in the electorate.

Recently, I was talking to a retired engineer, who is an avid web surfer. He proclaimed that he's lost 95% of the rights he had in 1945, but could not name them. (He's also the one who told an elderly friend of mine that she probably contracted anthrax through the mail when she complained of some respiratory distress during one of the anthrax scares.)

Perhaps others won't agree with my reaction to the judge's defeat as it relates to the larger issue of manipulation of
public opinion, but I see it as part of the same continuum.

The city vs. highway mileage does sound weird. Even with the rational. It takes energy to accelerate, yes you can store some of the energy from breaking but you can't get 100% efficency. Then again you typically drive slower in the city. Still I think the better rating for the city driving might be an artifact of how the EPA test is run. I think steady driving on the highway would beat typical city driving despite regenerative breaking. I don't think other hybrids have a better rating for city driving then for highway driving. apparently the Honda Insight is rated at 60mpg city 66mpg hwy

Here is a report from a Prius owner

Priuses probably won't actually get the EPA rated mileage

I have a 2005 Prius...

I like it very much. It qualified for a tax credit last year and you may want to check that out.

The reason it gets better mileage in City. The electric engine works in the city whereas the gasoline kicks in
over 40mph.

The car handles very well. I have driven it up to 80mph and could have gone fast. It does not slow down on hills.

I get better mileage in Florida than here at over 3000ft.where there are many hills..

No discernible difference between it and my Subaru Forester which is a SVU... and gets 22 mph in City but 30 on highway. I drive at a steady 70mph speed... unless I want to pass.

Sitting in a SUV has an advantage to the Prius in that one is up higher and in that respect I feel a bit more secure. And in a parking lot people hear you. In the Prius I must be careful as I come upon people as it makes no noise... That may be a feature you might like. Quiet and easy to listen to books on C.D.

The Prius is mainly for around town driving..and I am averaging... Florida and NC.. about 48 mpg. The car does not get the 60 mph, that was advertised and from my experience on the Hybid threads... no one gets many more miles than that.

Good luck in your research..
