eracer, on cache amounts

The real problem here is that there is insufficient difference in performance gained by doubling the cache. The cache should really be quadrupled in AMD's chip variants. So if they're selling 2x512KB cache variants, 2x1MB is an insufficient jump. The alternative should be 2x2MB.

So maybe this is pointing to the introduction of 2x2MB units. These would be more performance comparable to Conroe, and would make benchmark fudging much more difficult as well.

"the cost of running two separate cores and logistics for those cores is obviously eating at the bottom line for AMD"

That isn't at all obvious. What is obvious is that despite the ramp of Fab36 and the wafers from Chartered, AMD is still having trouble meeting demand...

Dear Eracer:

Sorry, A64 FX-62 is a 2x1MB L2 desktop processor. So Dailytech gets it wrong again. Typical performance for them.

eracer,

AMD To Ditch Initial AM2 2x1MB Cache Desktop CPUs

That would certainly suck, if true. I was thinking about 4800 after the price cuts...

re: AMD's failed product launch: AMD To Ditch Initial AM2 2x1MB Cache Desktop CPUs

AMD needs to change it's mix of DC/SC asap (it's way behind Intel in this respect). Coming NGA it's absolutely needed. So they're simply making room by producing more 2x512KB units versus less slightly higher performing 2x1MB parts. It's a pragmatic move. It also shows that at 90nm AMD doesn't have enough capacity to produce enough DCs.

Regards,

Rink

Oh *that* will help performance vs. Core2. Now with 1/4 the L2 cache per core! The 65nm slip to December and the even bigger Rev F die is really putting the hurt on.
