@Joe - 2x1MB
Sorry, I can't understand your frustration? Don't get me
wrong, 2x1MB are nice, but with much more than 200mm^2 its
clear, that AMD isn't that keen to produce these parts in Mio.
which they have to supply, if the price changes appear.

Go for an Opteron, which all have 2x1MB and which will be
available for a "long time".

Re: Discontinuing the 1MB processors from volume lines does make sense, as AMD needs to be cost conscious in the upcoming pricing environment, at least until 65nm. I would not be surprised if the 2x1MB resurfaced. Either that or L3.

In the meantime, I think it would be advisable for AMD to keep alive more FX speed grades with 2x1MB with high enough premium over 2x512.

I don't disagree, but the timing is awful. To kill CPUs three weeks after introduction screams "PANIC MODE!" even if it was done for the right reasons. Deciding not to them at all would have been far less embarrassing. Who in AMD gets the blame for introducing them in the first place? AMD overpromised and underdelivered, and that is something which they can't afford to do often.

Joe, eracer - Perhaps the OEMs are primarily interested in the 2x512K X2s, and if the rumored Dell desktop were one of those, volume at 90nm might become an issue with continued 2x1MB X2s. So it wouldn't be an unreasonable step at all, especially if the Dell desktop thing were somewhat unexpected.

I would not be surprised to see a 2*1MB X2 5200+ tip up one day. Would that suit your needs ?
