Mannie, Ecuador vs. Germany may not be intense since both are through .....

.......... Ecuador has goal differential--so Germany must win to take the group. The second place team probably faces England in the round of 16. England should win the group with its pathetic victory just now over Trinidad and Tobago.

It doesn't look like England, Paraguay, or Sweden can play now with Germany or Ecuador. Weird. That may change with Rooney getting warmed up today for England. They're tight and the two late goals today may help loosen them up.

Germany will likely get past Ecuador and our South American fairybook story should come to an end as England starts to get its act together with a bit of a revamped lineup.

The real surprises have been Germany and Spain. It just shows you how the host country gets revved up for this thing. Young Germans are rising to the occasion. Spain was on fire yesterday. Although they were helped by nerves from the Ukranians and strange officiating.

Other surprises--negatively. Brazil is in trouble unless they figure out what to do with Ronaldo. Poland. France.

It's such a great tournament. Well designed generally. It's great how the first round is a warmup to a degree. The good teams just have to be careful not to get blindsided. Like Argentina four years ago ... and Poland this time. England is finding it compass. They miss Rooney and Owen. Both are overcoming injuries and lack of fitness.

Have you seen the beauty of the stadiums the Germans have built for this grand show? Incredible! The one in Hamburg today was sensational.
