Big Government Repubicans are as old as the Republican party. The first Republican president, Lincoln, oversaw what was conceptually an unprecedented change in the centralized power of the federal government.

I'd be hard pressed to tell you a president in the last 100 years, whatever the party, who hasn't presided over greater centralization and arrogation of power to the center -- by which I mean the center of power, the federal government, not the center of the political spectrum, between left and right, which, like you, I don't really believe in.

I divide politics into individualists vs. statists, and they're all statists in Washington.
