I thought this statement, at minimum, suggested no support for gun control:

With regard to private citizens owning firearms for sport or self-defense, 92 percent of the respondents supported civilian gun ownership rights.

As I just posted to someone else, there are any number of "police organizations" out there, each with its own agenda.

Of course, the poll I referenced is a couple of steps up from an anecdotal chat with a police chief somewhere<g>

The National Association of Police Chiefs is just that -- police chiefs and sheriffs. They are the ones that Clinton and Kerry turned to for anti gun support. The NAPC is more of a political organization, as reflected by the jobs held by its members. Rank and file cops have other organizations, and they are much more pro gun.

So, when you see a poll produced by the NAPC, it will be more political (and probably liberal) than what most LEOs think.

I think the last big hoo-ha over guns was letting the ban on "assault weapons" lapse last year. Based on what my kids tell me, the real ban was on ugly looking guns, there wasn't any functional difference. Pretty much everything that was banned was cosmetic.

Most of them (e.g. AR-15) are actually very accurate and good for target shooting, which many people enjoy as a sport and recreational activity.

My immediate family doesn't hunt but they like to target shoot and shoot skeet. My dad, on the other hand, is an avid hunter. I grew up around guns. Don't understand the fascination, don't understand the fear and revulsion, either.
