The mutation comes before the selection.

As I pointed out before, the sucessful variation must be already present in a lifeform at the time it is needed. If you think about that you will realize that there is no way to know what selection will follow at the time the mutation first appears. There is no way for an intelligence to know what mutation will be necessary for the next selection unless the future has already been predestined. Even if an intelligence were present, it would not have the information necessary to achieve a goal.

I understand that this disappointing to some. Many scientists really wish they could travel faster than light and so visit far away planets and galaxies. They too write books in which they realize their fantasies, but ultimately these too don't fit the reality we live in.
