Saddam's generals said he destroyed his WMD after the Gulf War, then just pretended he still had them in order to scare his domestic enemies. The CIA confirmed this six months before the invasion of Iraq but the WH didn't want to hear that. They wanted to hear fictional accounts. Cheney went to the CIA ten times to pressure analysts into faking WMD stories. Tenet finally gave in and sold his soul to Cheney's devil. They made Powell their public liar. Every single thing Powell told the UN turned out to be total fabrications. Just like the smearvets claims against Kerry. All total nonsense.

>>The columnist David Warren called it a shell game where the pea had got lost, as good a description as any. That's one reason why this "Bush lied!" meme really burns me - it is both ignorant and deeply dishonest. For gosh sakes, go charge Bush with his real errors of judgment, don't go around demonizing and scapegoating him for invented sins.<<

Nadine -

I'm sorry, but the Bush campaign in 2004 was based on a pattern of deception and the manipulation of voters using fear. Of course, this was no different from pretty much all the statements coming from the Administration throughout 2002, 2003, and 2004, so it was nothing new.

I wouldn't just say that Bush lied. I'd say the whole Administration lied, and continues to lie, in that they carefully craft their messages in such a way as to deceive the public. Intentional deception is lying, no matter how careful you are to maintain deniability.

It's not just about the WMD. They lie on any number of subjects.

PS: Interesting how you're willing to cite the NY Times when you think they support your points, but give them no credibility at all when they don't.
