If I ever find evidence that widespread weapons ownership is a prerequisite to a safe, prosperous and happy society, I might get off the fence. But like I said, I have lived several places where almost no one is armed and everyone does just fine.

We will never make that happen in the US, however.

Individual ownership of weapons has been around far longer than the Second Amendment:

So have hereditary leadership, clitoridectomy and cannibalism.
Even though the first does seem to be coming back into vogue in the US :( ... but just because something's been traditional for a very long time, doesn't make it good, wise, advisable or indeed mandatory.

Of course, the third could be far more interesting as a policy... get the Green vote, maybe?
