But if QCT is the engine room for patents getting filed, how can is split off from QTL? And, the issue of pass through rights (where Qualcomm reduce customers royalty costs) might be affected. Its not that simple.

sanyo already has a CDMA lic. that was the bueaty of the JV, as it allows NOK to take branded phones for CDMA out of it wihtout paying a lic fee. It just would probably NOT have used TI chips and thus I would expect that some of this reason behind the backoff was TI related.

As I said, the JV had better stay dead, or it will become painfully obvious that market manipulation was taking place to accomodate negotiations. And if anyone even half close to GSM took advantage of this in the way of shorts that there would be a very big case to the SEC.

As for spinning the chip biz, it would end up wiht higher net costs to the handset guys. Independent, the chip guys would not have to honor any deal made by Qualcomm and could thus change whatever they wanted. Even in that role, they would have far greater freedom in deal making than they have now.
