The crippling of America

June 26, 2006

I'm sitting here typing this article after flipping through the news channels scanning the latest news of the day. Naturally, the story of the day is this "grave offense" of scanning potential terrorists bank records to actually see what they are doing with the money, who they are getting it from, and where it is going. The horror of being proactive in the fight on terror! Shame on the Bush Administration! Why have I not listened to Ted Kennedy and Rep. Ed Markey from Massachusetts, who yesterday said it was something that needed to be investigated and reined in before it got out of control. One problem though Ed, members of Congress had already been briefed on the program. Your colleagues knew about it. Maybe you didn't know about it, but they did.

If you have somehow been sleeping under a rock the last few days, the issue at question is the Bush Administration decision to search financial records and actions of those in this country suspected of being tied to Al-Qaeda or other terrorist connections. The New York Pravda Times had an article written by two reporters, Comrade Eric Lichtblau and Comrade James Risen detailing the alleged atrocity. Let me be clear, I don't believe we should give the government a blank check on what they do in the fight against terror. My problem isn't with what they did in this case, my problem lies with the press and those who hide behind the 1st Amendment in hopes to mask their real intention.

I am disturbed by the following statement from the executive Editor of the New York Times regarding the Bush Administration's 90 minute appeal for the Times to NOT write the story in favor of national security. Bill Keller said the following "We remain convinced that the administration's extraordinary access to this vast repository of international financial data, however carefully targeted use it may be, is a matter of public interest." Now this statement isn't the issue, the issue is the government of the United States of America specifically asked the New York Times to NOT run with this article. The Treasury department spent the aforementioned 90 minutes stressing the legality of it and the importance in the war on terror. After all, it had successfully led to the capture of two high profile targets, including the mastermind of the 2002 Bali attacks, in recent years. From Page 3 of the online edition of the article is news that nobody will hear about Treasury Department employees on condition of anonymity said the following "The data does not allow the government to track routine financial activity, like A.T.M. withdrawals, confined to this country, or to see bank balances, Treasury officials said. And the information is not provided in real time — Swift generally turns it over several weeks later. Because of privacy concerns and the potential for abuse, the government sought the data only for terrorism investigations and prohibited its use for tax fraud, drug trafficking or other inquiries, the officials said. I am not sure how any credible reporter can justify writing and then publishing an article that could be damaging to national security and do so with a clear conscience. Maybe these men don't have a conscience, I don't know. I can't answer that. That is something they have to face and decide. Where is your sense of responsibility to country?

Another safeguard that was added to prevent abuse of the system was the following: Officials realized the potential for abuse, and narrowed the program's targets and put in more safeguards. Among them were the auditing firm, an electronic record of every search and a requirement that analysts involved in the operation document the intelligence that justified each data search. (Treasury Undersecretary Stuart) Levey said the program was used only to examine records of individuals or entities, not for broader data searches.

I do want them to understand this as well. Dana Perino, deputy White House press secretary said Friday following release of the story and information. "We know the terrorists pay attention to our strategy to fight them, and now have another piece of the puzzle of how we are fighting them. We also know they adapt their methods, which increases the challenge to our intelligence and law enforcement officials." There it is in black and white. A White House official disclosing that our strategy has been compromised by the very people it's designed to protect.

Do you hear that New York Times? You just aided and abetted our enemy with information on how we are trying to stop another 9/11. You gave them an out, a way to improve their war on America and make it harder for us to find where they might strike next. I am sure you sit proudly at your desk watching CNN with your chest puffed out as far as can be, proudly receiving the pats on the back of your comrades for delivering a devastating blow to the evil Christian G.W. Bush. What you did should be considered patriotic and in line for a Pulitzer Prize they'll say. This type of delusional thinking has penetrated all areas of media, the thought that Bush, the 10 Commandments in school, tax cuts and Christians are more of a threat to America than terrorism.

Finally, I can't help but wonder if these same people who wrote the article, who eagerly want to see America weakened, were in New York City on the morning of September 11, 2001. On their way to work did they drive by the World Trade Center as they do each day? Could they see the smoke rising from their building? Had they seen the planes hit the towers and kill our fellow Americans? My challenge to them is to stand in front of the families who lost a member on that fateful morning. Stand in front of the little girl who lost her daddy and say "I wrote an article that will make it harder to catch the people who killed your dad." Tell that husband who lost his wife that she died in vain, because you are doing everything you can to make sure the enemy knows what we are doing to stop them. You forget that with our enormous freedom we have been blessed with from God comes an enormous amount of responsibility to PROTECT that freedom. What you have done is added your name to the list of people who are indirectly responsible if an attack occurs, and we find out later that they were able to elude our authorities because they knew how we were trying to track them.

You have turned your back on America, no matter what your left leaning friends may say. You have made your decision to put the country's safety on the back burner. Instead you have chosen to harm the country in the name of personal gain and liberal adoration. I have only one question left to ask:

How quickly have you moved the clock forward to midnight?
