Regional business groups can have the effects you describe. You all shared ideas for new production techniques, new materials, efficiency marketing and other critical areas. This made all of you stronger and gave you the ability to compete with the big boys. That is an excellent example of using mentors to guide small businesses through troubled waters.

I am sure there were some local or near local business owners to cavort with also. Like the industry group, the benefits of associating with local entrepreneurs flows both ways. For the new business owner just starting out, these people are easier to find, and easier to afford to associate with.
