Not sure about the legality in such cases. But I know that I was interrogating a member of a gang that I knew was directly plotting to kill people in my community, or even my family, I probably wouldn't care much about the law. My priority would be to get the information any way that I could in order to save their lives.. And I dare say that, if people honestly self-analyzed their own priorities, they'd do the same thing.
