Since Bush has declared that disclosing any information about the known surveillance programs would "compromise national security," and that even contesting the legality of these programs is itself a threat, he has declared himself, with the complicity of a few key members of congress, the sole arbiter of what national security is, even to the extent that the courts should not even be involved. That is a subversion of the constitution.

The particular program whose disclosure has you all hot and bothered cannot be a secret, after five years, to any individual or group planning or financing terrorist activity. Nevertheless, that Bush seems to feel he can secretly monitor every aspect of communications at random and without warrants, without discussion, oversight or limits and with impunity is utterly unacceptable.

Quo bene means "who benefits?" I take back my statement that no one has benefited from Bush's actions. First, Iran is a major benefactor of the Iraq war. Their influence in Iraq has risen by many orders of magnitude. Second, Al Qaida has benefited by recruiting many thousands of foreign fighters to come to Iraq to kill Americans. They have also benefited by having our military tied down in a guerilla war, bleeding our military, financial and political assets day by day.

As for "you, me and the rest of the world," lets just start with Iraq. The infrastructure is destroyed. Power generation, oil production, roads, schools, the health care system are all essentially not functioning. The intellectuals are emigrating to Jordan, Saudi, Syria. Gone. The greatest collection of antiquities stolen or destroyed. Millions of depleted uranium shells foretell an ecological and public health disaster. Two entire cities are destroyed. 50% unemployment.

So tell me, how am I better off? Chapter and verse, please.
