Just fixed it - p. 28.

Here some more good stats on CDMA2000 worldwide growth.

cdg.org

Interestingly enough, and I apologize in advance for not being able to format a table correctly on SI but Latin America and Caribbean has had the biggest change in share of overall CDMA2000 share from March 2005 to March 2006 with what looks like a 2.4% increase in market share, i.e 17.8% to 20.2% . In percentage growth terms it would be much more.

Percent of Total
Asia-Pacific North America Caribbean & Latin America Europe, Middle East & Africa Total
Mar-98 77.0% 21.7% 1.3% 0.0% 100.0%
Mar-99 63.1% 30.9% 5.4% 0.6% 100.0%
Mar-00 55.3% 32.3% 11.4% 1.0% 100.0%

Ok Slack, What are some reasons for GSM success? Is it that the majority of subscriber adds are the lower level of users who just want service? GSM still enjoying first to market advantage? CDMA operators unable to exploit the differentiation available with CDMA capabilities? Price of handsets? Total system costs?

When - if at all, do the forces conspire to turn the tide?

Reliance was always my best example

Reliance got thoroughly screwed up by:

1) 2004 change from a progressive government, which recognized the value of tech neutrality in telecom and had just begun to uproot the entrenched and very expensive GSM operators. The new and present government not only leans heavily left and owes its populist victory to a faction that is innately opposed to the industrial entrepreneurial Ambani Family and all their previously successful deals, manipulations and connections, but is in the pocket of thiose operators and their financial supporters who were being displaced by Reliance and their cronies. That election was a very big deal. Killed CDMA there, in fact. ["In politics, there is the added problem of concentrated benefits/diffuse costs. Not to mention outright graft, confiscation and corruption and outright stupidity of dumb people in charge." -- M. Winn , 06/29/06 ]

2) The death of the Amabni patriarch and ensuing hostilities among the Mother, and the sons. Mukesh had run Reliance Infocomm smartly. Anil never could have and does not.

I think you have to look to Tata for a better example, if you can stand to look at India at all.

edit: It will be interesting to see what the more independent TRAI comes up with in the Fall. (although the new head man was appointed by this government)
