"I guess every American is not a saint." Seven men out of a platoon at a minimum knew about the crime in advance. It seems to me that you only have two choices -- you can argue that it's part of the normal bell curve of human behaviour, or you can argue that it's abnormal. I would argue that it's abnormal, and it means something is wrong within that platoon. If dehumanization of the enemy is both widespread and acceptable, steps need to be taken.
