Not everyone classifies himself as liberal or conservative. I don't, for example. I agree that self-labelled conservatives tend to disbelieve the global warming hypothesis, but equivalently, self-labelled liberals tend to believe it. In my observation both groups are tending to go with the crowd (two different crowds).

- every single person I meet who says it is questionable is pretty conservative.

Well, for one I am not conservative.

2) how and why are the left and right forming categorical opionions rather than subject specific opinions??

Ain't this true for almost every so-called social, economic, or whatever problems in the world? The left and the right are two different and opposite state of minds, but they have the same goal: to win their case and impose it on the other group.

koan,
I didn't realize that my post had anything to do with politics.
I was noting the sloppy journalism that turns a few selected returned questionnaires into a statement of fact for an entire professional group. It is a regrettable trend that infests today's media without regard to political affiliation as far as I can see. It is the equivalent of an exploration company drilling 2 or 3 drill holes in small but known rich veins and extrapolating a multi-million ounce deposit from the results. I think any of us who invest in exploration companies can appreciate the disingenuousness of that approach. (Of course some of the media follows the Howe Street approach a step further and instead of creating misleading "statistics" simply generates a complete fraud.)
Maybe I'm ranting about an issue that doesn't resonate with you, but how you make the leap from my previous post to stating that you have determined my general political beliefs is baffling to me.

Regards,
RL

>>1) how and why did mainstay conservatives more or less categorically deny global warming and mainstay liberals support it?<<

That's easy -- science is done with an agenda since government controls the purse strings. I laugh at the scientists as "objective voice" model -- what it really is, is -- scientist as priest and how dare you think for yourself. The same thing the anit-religious accuse those with spiritual beliefs of ...

Liberals love global warming because, in theory, it provides justification to stop the evul polluters [you know -- those evil people completely removed from satisfying any of the wants and desires of liberals -- the ones who just love to despoil the environment for the sheer thrill of it], let the government decide what is produced in the areas of energy and transportation.

Doesn't matter whether it's workable or based on good science.
[Progress in science is rarely a democratic process -- developed with such "consensus" -- yes, at some point large numbers of people become convinced of a thing -- but that's usually when something is about to be turned on its head.]

In the end, it really doesn't matter -- energy is too BIG and important of a market for the government to wield the kind of control that Gore-lovers would like. They are finished before they start. Markets will determine the solution to the problems of energy and environment -- the real ones, that is.
