"Most people know when a life has ended."

I think you may have misunderstood my post. We know when an individual's life has ended, died, given up the ghost, passed on, expired, what ever you want to call it because certain functions that we are able to detect have ceased operations.

The point of my post was more directed at part (1 b) of Websters definitions.

1 a : the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body b : a principle or force that is considered to underlie the distinctive quality of animate beings c : an organismic state characterized by capacity for metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction

We know what it looks like when we see it in a viable state but we don't really account fully for its tendency to show up, wander around and sneak off. We don't know if there is a physical aspect like a lifeton, more intangible, or just hanging around like gravity; or is it created/destroyed moment to moment in various organisms and forms.
