Scientists Simulate Effect of Earthquake on House

WGRZ-TV Video Report

By WGRZ-TV Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY -- Scientists at University at Buffalo on Tuesday simulated the effect of a large earthquake on a full-sized house.

Engineers built a 3-bedroom house on what is called a "shake table." The house was subject to the equivelant of a 6.7 magnitude earthquake, similar to the one that struck Northridge in 1994.

The house was completely furnished to simulate a real home. The house shook, but did not fall down. Several items inside the home were damaged or knocked down.

The purpose of the simulation was to figure out the effect that earthquakes have on homes built out of wood. They are doing this so they can figure out how to better build earthquake resistant wooden homes.
