Even resorting to Lacan, I still think it's a poor film for me. Memento And Breaking the Waves I thoroughly connected with, Eyes Wide Shut and Holy Smoke were, imo, a mess- though Eyes Wide Shut was certainly the worst.

I think it is possible that the "real" for the French is different- and I did think I was missing some cultural iconography- and so I think it quite possible that a French person, steeped in French culture and history, and the experience of living in contemporary France, would have a much different reaction to the film. Perhaps.
