J. Chris...If you were elected to Congress would you want to stand up and say that they should cut 1000 jobs in your district because the defense spending there was unnecessary?

You'd be a ONE term congressman and your wife and kids would hate you along with everybody else.

It is true that we vastly outspend our current or likely potential enemies.

OTOH

1 - The amount spent by some of those countries is a lot more than their official defense budgets.

2 - Countries with drafts devote resources to the military when they draft soldiers, even if they pay them next to nothing.

3 - Its not insanity to greatly outspend your current or potential enemies, in fact it can be very wise if you can afford it.
