I meet a lot of people. I can count on the fingers of one hand the people who are as riled up as the extremists on SI. Of course this is laid back California- maybe there are much angrier places. Bur even on SI, when I add up the posters I know, 95% of them are wonderful- kind, funny, interesting, intelligent. I really do think it's a small group- but they stand out because they are so likely to attack anyone they perceive as different, and so many of us are going to be "different" because by definition this small group is very out of step with the rest of us. Thus most of us will have had negative experiences with the same very small group of posters. Just my opinion. You know I've been watching SI grow and develop for 10 years. I think there might have been more angry nuts earlier- because I haven't actually been physically threatened in ages (which was why I changed from using my real name to using a pseudonym).
