I agree that it is a little odd to have the voting be essentially private (PM's and email) and then reveal it all afterward. I think if it is to be public then we should just use the OT thread to do the voting. But if private then the way Rink did it is great. I like public from the standpoint of being above reproach, no possibility of the appearance of impropriety. Which is good for the moderator. I can understand private too, though. That is partly why I didn't vote - as a moderator in another context (the contest) I don't want to 'take sides' like this type of vote requires. FWIW.

JJ

Tim, JJ, thread, re: Should the vote be made public?

I published it because I think:
1. The results can be validated this way
2. I thought it important to show there are many reasonable people both among the aye and the nay voters*
3. Reasons not to make it public aren't that big imo
4. I sort of think to remember that Mani did this too (I asked someone to find out because of the type of my membership I can't search previous years, but it isn't that important - see last paragraph of this post).

*I want to make one additional remark about point 2. above. There were several reasons why I thought this point was important. One of those I'd like to highlight. Someone had suggested this was a lynching but:
- All the additional comments I received (the majority commented on why they were for or against) did most certainly not point in that direction as almost all people had stated opinions based on reason. As an example I posted two of the most received comments that further disqualified the lynching theory.
- The kind of people both in the list that voted for the suspension and in the list that was against had a good amount of moderate people among them, making the lynching theory further unlikely.
Even though the beginning of the vote can also be characterized as somewhat emotional any lynching theory is most certainly not supported by what I saw during the vote. As you understand I am rather grateful for that.

Anyway, taken together that's why I made it public.

When there is a next vote I'll ask everyone in a secondary question to declare whether they think it should be made public and act accordingly.

Regards,

Rink
