They took an "average but not great" system and re-engineered it into a disaster. It was always a threaded tree format (multiple topic chains per specific stock thread) but it was displayed chronoloically so you could always read, say, the latest 40 msgs or traverse between today's msgs and yesterday's msgs.

With the new system, you only get topic chain titles. If you're trying to read the latest 40 msgs, you have no way knowing what those are, until you click into each chain. There may only be one new one in a chain, 39 other new ones spread across several other chains, and only a 'recent time' is given, no other info. Click this chain, get a msg, click back, click another chain, get 2 msgs, click back, click some more, click back some more. Took me a half hour just to read 9 recent messages on their REFR board. Here at SI, you can do that in under 10, sometimes under 5 minutes.

If your style is that you only pay attention to a specific poster or two on a given board, you can't do that now, unless they happen to make the very last post in a chain. If second to last, you have no indication of their presence unless you go into the chain. But the poster may not be in there. In the old chron order, you could always scan down and see posts by author 'X'. It's a Big Click Safari now, what you'll bag on the hunting trip, nobody knows. Will you find the Elk you were looking for? Nobody knows. Can you find and read 10 posts before dinner? Nobody knows.

They've finally usurped RB's throne as Dregs of Board Design.
