Because they have the oil and the US wants it, and because the US has nuclear weapons and they don't, is it not easy to rationalize the events of today? Chaney and his neocon hordes want the Arab oil at any cost and the Arabs are determined to protect and safeguard their wealth That's ridiculous. The US has long shown a willingness to pay high prices for oil, just keep it flowing. Japan, Europe and now China too. The thing that changed on 911 (remember it?) was the idea that we didn't need to care how messed up the Middle East was because those troubles were over there.
