why should anyone tolerate them in an enlightened society?

Not sure what you mean by "tolerate" but if you mean, shout down or try to get to shut up, I think you're proving my point.

I don't agree with them but I respect the right of others to believe things I don't agree with, and say things I don't agree with.

I will reject them personally but I will not shout them down nor try to get them to shut up.

Perhaps I misunderstood something here.

"Enlightened" indicates your framework. Others have other frameworks. They might say the same thing only substitute "moral" or "god-fearing" for your "enlightened" and then add a list of your favorite things. Same difference, seems to me. Personally, I prefer enlightenment, too, but others don't. And they don't see any need to tolerate my enlightenment.

to endorse slavery or racial superiority?

Your framework took you from "confederate flag" to slavery and racial superiority. It doesn't necessarily mean that. It may be just a love of the South or it may be respecting some ancestors. At worst nowadays it's politically incorrect. Should you tolerate political incorrectness?
