Bear in mind that those who are described by what is now called "classical liberal" as distinguished from "liberal" are in the conservative camp. Your gutless wonders are conservatives and often Republicans.

The latter bunch, the ones who abandoned "liberal" in favor of "progressive" when "liberal" became an epithet were not classical liberals.

I cannot imagine JFK or HHH being considered "liberal" today. The problem IMO is that those who use the term to describe themselves have shrunk what it means (to be a "liberal"). Liberal now seems to have become a cover word for Socialists or those further left. It is as though the Henry Wallace Democrats, that Hubert Humphery and Truman worked so hard to remove from power (from the Democratic Party), have now become the Democrats powerbase.
