I agree with MrB's comment regarding the Law of Unintended Consequences...

That said, I agree with you that the feature of recommending posts should be open to all, including the "free" aliases. SI wants them to stay here, and not go elsewhere. The more eyeballs, the better. Ultimately, some of them will actually become paying subscribers, presuming their SI experiences are good. Therefore, it follows that allowing a privilege here and there is probably in the best interests of the site. Besides that, with all levels of subscribers participating, recommended posts might actually acquire some real meaning, rather than being a simple popularity contest.
