Ethanol will lesson CO 2 emissions from Fossil Fuels..

If
produced without the use of Coal..Methane..ect..

Brazil is doing this
by burning the baggase in fuel production..

(Baggase consists of vegetable fibres discarded after extracting juice from sugarcane.)

American ethanol
is produced by burning
an incredible amount of coal..

totally Insane..
unless you are a Whore
for King Coal

Ethanol production can be carbon neutral, so it does contribute to holding CO2 emissions down.
Howsomever, EtOh certainly isn't the remedy to PO, at least as it now exists. Corn is a piss poor feedstock, and the best you get out of it is an EROEI of 1.34. Since it can't be shipped thru pipelines, by the time you get it to the refinery, you might end up with less net energy than you put in the system. But there are better feedstocks than corn, which don't have ADM/MON/Cargill pushing them, like coconut palm, hemp, and algae. There may be better alcohols; propanol, butanol. There may be a way to use entire plants; cellulosic alcohol, but that's been 30 years away for 30 years.

Some number crunching; he has more...

E3 Biofuels: Responsible Ethanol
The company is E3 Biofuels. Their concept is this: Grow corn, produce ethanol, feed the byproducts to cattle, harvest the manure, produce methane from the manure in a biodigester, use the methane to fuel the boilers, and use the remaining solids to fertilize the soil. This is ethanol production in more of a Brazilian mold (i.e., byproducts are used to fuel the process). Has a picture of the system.
