Its well understood how higher concentrations of CO2 trap heat and warm the earth. That graph is over a large time scale - 150,000 years. Of course we don't understand why the levels of CO2 changed so much back then - its not like people were driving cars!

On the flip side, large volcanic eruptions can emit enough dust to cool the earth. Luckily humans have been releasing tons of particulates in the atmosphere - and this has kept the rate of heating down (see Global Dimming). One solution to the current problem is to burn coal without environmental controls. The particulates would counter the increased CO2 ... or maybe some major volcanoes will erupt.

It is definitely complicated.

One last point on that graph: notice that the estimated CO2 concentration varied between 180 and 280 ppm over the last 150K years.

Currently CO2 is at 384.04 ppm (as of June '06) and climbing ...
