The Shah brought modern technology to a nation of villagers. In thirty years these people went from donkey carts to Western City life with all the modern conveniences, wealth, and corruption. Some of the more affluent people (the people you know) made the transition easily but many experienced culture shock and that opened the door for the Iyatolla Khomeni to capture their hearts. Now it is a different story. The current population is in general educated and affluent about technology and socio-political dynamics.

Lebanon has been suffering from a split personality for 50 years. It can't decide whether to be the modern garden spot of the ME or a leader in social/religious movement. All sides are trying to play that to their advantage.

There was nothing progressive about the shah, who was as vicious as they come, every bit the equal of Saddam. The progressive force in Iran was embodied in mohammed mossadeq, Iran's first democratically elected leader who was, as you know, ousted by the CIA, leading to the Shah. You reap what you sow.
