Believable acceptance of israel is the key. Egypt and Jordan are believable. I am not sure other arab countries buy in and we know that the terrorists dont. Israel is surrounded by 100mm folks who deny their right to exist for the most part. Once that goes away all else is possible. If that doesnt go away, Israel will always be heavy handed in its own defense and the world will be forever criticising them for overreacting. Problem is as much with euros who have coddled arab rejectionsists, as with bush.

Perhaps Bush really doesn't know what to do and would rather go fishing in Crawford than have to work on the issue. Perhaps the Republicans really don't have any ideas and can't send Rice shuttling around the area because she doesn't know what to do even if she went.

Maybe they're way beyond their paygrade but refuse to ask for help from the adults. They refused any advice from the adults before they blundered into Iraq after all. This really is their MO.

OTOH maybe they're just waiting for a huge blowup, call it Armageddon lite to satisfy their regressive knuckle dragging minions and enjoy the massive oil profits while the world plunges into a belligerent recession.
