I don't know how it handles apps on data migration. But you're right about the registry. It's still a mess as far as I can tell. But the control panel programs that manage application install and uninstall seem to be better at what they do.

OS X cannot migrate all apps though either. If there is copy protection involved this has never worked for me. I have quite a few programs that barf on migration and always end up needing to reinstall these.

On my Mac I can easily copy my ENTIRE drive or partition over to another drive or Partition.

Don't think you can do that with XP since you have to get permission from Microsoft to change anything on your computer.
