Sure but turning thousands of dollars into nothing is much easier when the money is in the bank or a brokerage account. The FDIC insures up to 750K per bank eh? (And as I said I do have a brokerage account (two actually.. ) and two bank accounts and two credit cards. Gold is insurance. I watched mad max beyond thunderdome - they lived in "bartertown" - when was the last time you actually tried to SIMULATE your insurance policy - give it a test run. Take a month and don't use any cash, credit cards, etc etc and show yourself how long you can exist bartering shiny metal - don't wait until the hurricane comes to test your escape plan. Yes highly portable and easily hidden, however relatively easily damaged, and highly illiquid compared to gold. I see golbugs put thier shiny metal in hard plastic protective cases so they don't get scratched - can't you do that for stamps too? As for liquidity - mcdonalds wouldn't take my gold coins last time I tried - I thought they could buy at least 50 dollars worth of hamburgers - but they said no - for that matter wal mart wouldn't take my gold coins or my 100 dollar bills the last time I tried - said they would only take 50's or lower or my credit/debit card. "I know a few folks living in the bahamas from the UK and the USA who thought they had beat the long arm of the tax man - they were wrong." What happened..? PS I pay my taxes. The government had more power than they thought and threatened sanctions on the bahamas I suppose if they didn't open up those banks. You go to the countryside looking for a farmer to take your gold - the gubbment has siezed all the farms and the farmer will get shot or arrested if he doesn't follow the new laws - how do you eat? Do you go into the woods like eric rudolph and live off the land? By the way I didn't say I didn't have any guns. I just said I don't have an arsenal. And it's not government guns that get me worried. Why in this nation of gun rights do the police and military get one grade of weaponry and you the citizen get a much lower less powerful grade of weapon? Who has the best weapons? If it gets to the point where you have to use your pea shooter against the national guards tanks and laser guided missles - you are finished citizen. Why go into a sinking rickety raft that won't delay the inevitable for long? Change will be probably be fairly slow in the US. We are quite far away from disaster. A whole bunch of entities have a big stake in keeping the ship afloat. But if it founders, it founders. I'll cross that road if we ever get there. CNN in atlanta once contacted some guys at IBM - we are having mass power failures they said - computers aren't rebooting correctly - we can't deliver the news to the masses - help us - several hundred thousand dollars latter and some experts sent by corporate jet to thier studios said you never did a test run on various scenarios and power outages? They said no. Its too late to test your escape plan from the hurriance when it is a few minutes away. I was in nawlins the year before the disaster - the experts saw they had a SEVERE evacuation problem when the mayor evacuated the city - I went 10 miles in 15 hours during that evacuation - thousands still died and they had time to fix it. My solution - don't be in nawlins during the hurricane season. I didn't go back the next year and avoided that titanic when the bomb did hit.
