>so far this has been a huge publicity coup for the Hezbollah, a triumph in making the people who started the war look like victims.

I quite agree that the Israeli army is aiding Hezbollah in making them into martyrs, raising their prestege, and helping in recruitment and sympathy. *Overwhelming and indiscriminate force used to punish Lebanese civilians for Hezbollah only implies that Hezbollah speaks for Lebanon, when it obviously does not. Overwhelming and indiscriminate force implies that Lebanon needs militants to resist Israel -- and remember that Hezbollah was created in response to the 1982 invasion of Lebanon by Israel. Overwhelming and indiscriminate force punishing Lebanese civilians of all kinds implies that Israel is a monster out of control, again aiding Hezbollah. For a force so opposed to Hezbollah, Israel's choice of tactics seem almost to play into its hands. Too bad Lebanese are not getting any sympathy from the US or Canada -- that might be a real propaganda coup for us in the Arab world.

*You can buy Israeli military claims that it is being cautious to avoid civilian casualties, or you can look at the black and white statistics. Hundreds of dead civilians, and purposeful destruction of roads, bridges, ports and power plants is obviously disproportionate to what Israel claims its intentions are, or to justifications of self-defence.
