Hello Paul,

Yes, I have to agree. What is fascinating to me is that the executive management seems to be all set-up to make huge sums of money ... whether they accomplish anything or not.

Since these are the "leaders" they are "causing" the company and all of the employees to look at things the same way ... they are causing the mediocrity. Employees are being "led" to accept their paychecks and benefits ... whether they accomplish anything or not.

As for interesting technologies ... I've seen some, but then it appears that they trap them into Linux. I'm not sure why, when many of these solutions can be cross platform, they do not create Mac and Windows versions of the applications. There is a huge Windows market out there, and a growing Mac OS-X market. Many of these people would really like to see solutions on their existing platform ... not be forced to move to "Desktop Linux."

I am an absolute Linux fan ... I'm using it on all of my servers ... I have moved all of my old NetWare servers to Linux ... I am building start-up companies around it ... however I am still running Windows on my desktop with Linux inside of Virtual PC (which is now FREE from Microsoft!). I know that I will be running Windows Vista also. I know that I will be developing application for Windows desktops for the foreseeable future.

I can not see at this point a day that I will be running Linux as my primary desktop OS. I'm not against it, I just do not yet see any opportunity in doing so. No advantage.

I agree that Novell still seems to be wandering ... I'm not sure what the mission of the company *is* any longer ...

08:42 ORCL Oracle to announce their own branded version of Linux? - SiliconBeat.com (15.29 )

SiliconBeat.com columnist notes: "We've heard rumors that Silicon Valley software giant Oracle is about to announce their own branded version of the Linux operating system, based on the Red Hat (RHAT) distro. It could come as soon as tomorrow. Jeff Nolan, who works for SAP, an Oracle competitor, has also heard the rumor, and is understated in his post this evening. If true, this is a big deal. It will put Oracle in direct competition with Red Hat, and also scare the other major player, Novell (NOVL). And it will shake up the entire world of open source, as Oracle invites developers to play on their platform instead of on all the others. It would put pressure on the stock price of Red Hat and Novell, and thus allow Oracle to consume them just as they have digested dozens of other players lately. And as Jeff politely puts it, it is a problem for SAP as well."

something that causes the world to pause

That would be Ximain or at least the idea of Ximian.

I was so excited when Novell bought Ximian. I thought WOW! FINALLY someone is going to expend a little energy to put a decent front end on Linux! WhaHOOOO!

Nope! Opportunity squandered.

What Novell doesn't understand is how to design a front end. That's it period. If they did this company would have valuations like Google or Apple.

It drives me nuts. I wanted to get in the field but after I worked for a company with 43 million in venture cap and a great product that went down because they couldn't see the value of usability I gave up. It's damn frustrating. They would have been a billion dollar company now, if they would have listened to me and spend $3000 on usability testing.

But they were old glass room boys. "That designer is a artsy type!"

Arrogant.

Google ONLY has a search engine!

Novell has THE POTENTIAL WORLD WIDE OS in the palm of their hands!

-------

Like others I'm still running W2K on my windows box because I hate what they did with XP. Specifically registration. I hate registration of devices. I hate the idea of it. People hate the direction Microsoft is moving.

My Mac still doesn't have it DRM and I'm hoping it never will. But I would LOVE to have a usable Linux box too.

I LOVE the idea of open source. I LOVE the idea of OPEN OFFICE. I LOVE the idea of GIMP. I keep hoping... all in vain.

I love the idea that someday Photoshop will be bloated with stuff that the average guy will never need and that a reasonably facile Gimp user could easily get by without paying a tax to Adobe every 2 years for more bloat.

I wouldn't mind paying a few buck to Novell for support. Provided they put a little money into Ximian. There is a whole world out there beyond the US that does not want to pay a bunch of money for computers.

Really Novell could be the McDonalds of the computer universe if they only understood that they are standing on the one cash cow that could make them the #1 OS supplier in the World.

Put me in charge and I'll turn this company around.
