Bush stopped federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. Embryonic stem cell research remains legal.

If it's so promising, seems like an easy way for the supporters to make a killing on their investments...

More than 60% support stem cell research. More like 80%. There is actually no rational reason not to support it. So even the 20% misguided ones have probably just been misinformed. That was a really stupid harmful veto on Bush's part.
