"if 40 percent of my own scientific colleagues are believers in a personal God, they're keeping pretty quiet about it."

This is why I miss the old Coevolution Quarterly aka Whole Earth Review. Lots of very interesting scientists who were pushing the cutting edge in every direction, some of whom openly believed in weird stuff like the Gaia Hypothesis, the Dancing Wu Li Masters, the Tao of Physics, the Self-Aware Universe, and other very strange things.

Not evangelical Christianity, but definitely weird.

Maybe "a personal God" is code?
