Regardless how the investment community uses the number, for LRCX to stop giving it out is a big mistake, in my opinion. There is so little information to begin with. Removing another reference point is not good and it's just another reason to be negative on the company. Yes, quarterly bookings are lumpy numbers that may be used to infer (often improperly) what the short term future holds, which is what Lam is saying here: Lead times are now so sure that our customers are leveraging that capability evidenced by the short term nature of our backlog, that in order some backlog guidance becomes less valuable as a statement of cycled momentum.

When everyone is yelling "top of the cycle" and Lam chooses this moment in time to stop reporting this number, it certainly looks suspicious. Just more fodder for the bears...
