Israel has already backed down from its original -- a whole two weeks or less old --- goals. This is the question that I was asking tonight, why can't the US and Israel fight the pipsqueak war?

So Rummy wanted to remake the military and make it lean and mean and high-tech. Apparently what he really meant was to make it low on soldiers, bullets and food but still make it cost more money than ever.

-----------

"But Olmert and Peretz should know that a large, cumbersome army built for conventional wars cannot defeat a small agile guerrilla group that controls the territory. Also, there is little in common between a neat military plan outlined in an air-conditioned briefing room and the reality of getting entangled in the old familiar Lebanese quagmire. "

Hi ralph-emerson; The Israelis went into this with such high expectations that it is natural for them to have a bit of a let down. I would like to know more about the economic effects on Israel. God knows the Israelis are blase enough when it comes to the Palestinians having tough economic conditions.

From the observation of those neighbors of Israel that are more or less friendly to it, it is clear that Israel's correct policy in 1967-1982 was to promote economic advancement in its neighbors regardless of the diplomatic or political details. Wealthy people have more reasons not to fight. I suspect that it is now too late to do this.
